ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm A.J. Smith

WHERE I COME FROM

I am born and raised in Two Mile. I started my law enforcement career in 1980 in Franklin County. I have extensive experience in criminal justice issues and policy development and implementation.
I love the outdoors and enjoy photography, running, biking and paddle boarding. With deep roots in Apalachicola, I want to see our water and beaches protected. I have a daughter and three grandchildren.

A THRIVING CAREER

I have held many posts in my law enforcement career and previously worked for the Leon County Sheriff's Office, The Florida Department of Insurance, Division of State Fire Marshal, Tallahassee, The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, Tallahassee and have served as executive director for the Florida Deputy Sheriff's Association. I have also served as an independent consultant, providing technical and consulting services to a variety of private corporations on matters relating to law enforcement operations and communications, alcoholic beverage laws and regulations and licensing, general criminal justice issues and correctional healthcare issues.

MISSION STATEMENT

Rehabilitation, Eradication & Enforcement

My approach to being Sheriff is a little different than most. I view my role as a caretaker of the community for which I serve. Franklin County faces many challenges, from the epidemic of meth usage, to the daily struggle of protecting our residents and hundreds of thousands that visit our area annually. Enforcement of the law, reaching out to our community through our rehabilitation programs, charity events and outreach are equally important. This is my home, my community and the people I care most about. My door is open, and I appreciate the opportunity to serve you. Thanks for your continued support.
